Afterthought of Basic abilities for a successful study in college should include

1. Do you hear yourself telling people: " I have my own values and principles. They should be respected under all kinds of circumstances.", or something similar?
If so, what would you say when someone laughs at you for never skipping classes?
If not, why could be the reasons?
2. Do you believe everything people tell you? Why or why not?
For instance, when your friend tells you that working as a part-time waiter in a fancy restaurant will get you a lot of money, how would you respond?
Make comments and reflect on your thoughts.

I am a stubborn person but not a man of principle. When my parents want to persuade me to receive their opinions, I always firmly say "I have my own thought! Don’t make a decision for me!” However, if the characters reverse, like in class or with my friends, I will be unable to speak out my opinion without hesitation. I usually think to myself” Why do I have no courage to against others’ opinions like saying it to parents?” I often feel regretful to myself. After watching “Basic abilities for a successful study in college should include, “I think what I lack is motivation. I am used to receive all teacher or others say so that I couldn’t think individually, critically and systematically.
It doesn’t mean that I should object for no reasons, instead, it is under some circumstances. The circumstances are out of my thought. “Think twice before you act” as the saying goes.

  1. In our culture, we have been taught to obey what the elderly say instead of speaking out our thoughts since we started to learn. Thus, we are not used to thinking independently, and sometimes we are even afraid of doing so. However, things are different now. With the development of technology, knowledge passes on rapidly and through diverse means. No particular source can cover everything. In this case, the learning ability of individuals turns into an essential quality and the concept of life-long learning has become a trend. Thinking independently and critically, therefore, plays a vital role in leading a person to a successful life and career.

  2. I agree with your opinion. Learning is really a life-long thing. But it is hard to find out what kind of knowledge is useful for our life and career, so cultivating multiple skills and interest is important, too. For this reason, we can have a broad mind to accept new ideas and use critical thinking to sift the information carefully.

  3. Take myself for example. At my early age, I was a timid, shy girl, not daring to express my own thoughts. Every time I disagreed with someone’ view, I often hesitated to speak out my own opinion, or even chose to keep silent. However, afterwards I always regretted it, blaming myself for lack of courage to be myself. Sometimes, I did learn lessons from the consequences. Nevertheless, change takes time. It was not until I entered college that I started to learn to be more independent in daily life as well as in ways of thinking. Going to college was my first time to leave my warm home, away from my parents’ protection, and lived without them. I had to count on myself for everything. In this case, I was forced to face every problem I encounter, and strived to solve it. At first, it was a misery. By and by, I became stronger and tougher to deal with everything on my own. I myself thus came to develop the ability and bravery to speak out my ideas and share them with other people. Eventually, I became aware that young people need to experience difficulty, hardship, or even frustration to become mature and independent. That’s the way I raise my four children now.

  4. Wow, four children, you must be a hard-working mother. I don’t think I am shy indeed. Actually, I am too weak to say something in class. I am afraid of saying wrong answers. In my sense, I know it is awful habit. However, in my sensibility, I exactly can’t show my opinions. Every time in class, if this kind of contradiction occurs, I will feel like something choke my throat and give my heart a tug. I have observed that this kind of situation happens in my summary of philosophy class(in Chinese called哲學概論) frequently. Since everyone does not major in philosophy, we are more unwilling to speak out our thought. Even our tutor encourages us to share our ideas without concern, not many people talk in class yet. I think this problem might be the biggest problem teachers worry about.
